Back again for another quick post on my painting exploits as I continue the hobby process on my Freebooter’s Fate minis. Today’s post is about the lowly Cultist, one of the cheapest and playstyle-defining deckhands available.

I may regret Some Decisions

Presented for your enjoyment, here is Cultist #1.

Front view. A lot of wood textures and paint here.
Rear view. Still more wood, but more of the cloth shown off.
A nice-looking side view showing shading as well as the motion in the piece

As is becoming standard for my Cult models, she uses a lot of earth tones in her clothing. Rather than making her whole dress red, I opted to go for a worn orange-y cloth that she layers with some red fabric to match my overall Cult scheme of everyone having that particular red color somewhere.

The NMM on the pitchfork is somewhat tragic, as I’m still struggling to work it out, but I promise I do show improvement at some point! What’s really fun, however, is the wood grain – that’s a lot of freehand lines, going through a number of different colors and tied together with washes. I’m too lazy to do a good job editing and correcting the white balance of my photos, but it does look quite good in person. I thankfully wrote down the recipe because the bases should be (relatively) matching for all the models in one crew, at least as far as I can hope.

She was fun to paint, too! Interestingly enough, she was the first model I assembled when I started back into my plan to work through my Freebooter’s Fate backlog, as I though I was working on a model I wasn’t too enthused about, but I ended up really liking her over my time painting.

I’ll cover their role in the crew more tomorrow with the second Cultist post, as I’m spacing out some of the model reveals so I can eventually link them to create a visual catalog of my painted stuff.

Hobby Progress

I finished my first of the Cazador guard today (apart from painting the wood base), and it was such a fun model. You’ll get to see how my NMM is steadily improving soon!

For non-painting, I mostly finished reviewing the English language reference file for the Compañero today. There was a lot of revision there, and I probably went waaaaaay too hard on the high-angle-fire-weapon write-up.
