Hooray, it’s an actual mechanics-related post for this blog. While I know the hobby elements are much easier for people to appreciate in a wider context, my central goal remains for this to be a resource that journals my own work getting demo crews available to create/grow a local scene and serve as an English-language resource for people.
The Group Shot
This is added well after the original post – I just wanted to put in the full crew photo!

The Crew And Equipment
Here’s the crew breakdown, which should seem familiar for anyone who’s followed the blog up until this point because you’ve seen all of the models when I painted them:
- Leader: Gualtiero
- Equipment: Dagger of Blood
- Loa: Cadùc
- Loa: Mary Chains
- Loa: Sangsue
- Loa: Talion
- Deckhand: Cultist
- Deckhand: Cultist
- Deckhand: Sansâme
- Deckhand: Sansâme
- Specialist: El Fusilio
This is a crew that meets the requirements I had for demonstrating what it is that makes the Cult interesting.
To break things down a little more, I think explaining Gualtiero’s equipment and loas is the best to show all of that. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, he is a mystical powerhouse – great access to a lot of loas, Souldriver and power reserve for his sansâmes, and cheap enough to bring a lot of mystical power to even a smaller game like this one.
The loas I chose for this are all designed around showing their different uses. I primarily stuck to Malevolence and Death, in part because they’re all fairly straightforward loas. There are two that are “direct attack” loas and two that function more as “buffing” loas to help members of the crew be more effective. I also had to include the Cult’s signature exclusive loa, Mary Chains, which also helps to explain why I painted 3 sansâmes despite only needing 2 in my primary list.
While there are some pretty high-domination loas here, Gualtiero should be able to get them into play thanks to how the rest of the crew functions. Using the Dagger of Blood along with a concentrate special action and the support of the mystical choir pieces, he can get to a base A of 5 – technically, the dagger will only be needed if there’s some serious resistance and we can’t get above A 4, but the penalties will balance it out.
I’m really excited to play this crew – it’s a great starting point for a lot of options for the Cult, and I can easily expand with a Specialist or two, along with experimenting with some different Deckhands as I work through my big ol’ backlog of models.
Hobby Progress
I finished the Compañero English language review and corrections! This was a big project, and I’m happy to be able to do my part for the English-language community around Freebooter’s Fate. The next stage is to go through and review every single character card in the app, which tells me that there are 515 individual cards available, some of which are not easily locatable online.
No painting yesterday, but I started writing out a few plans for some terrain builds. I’m an obsessive planner, if you can’t tell.
